Thanks to all who participated in another successful Read-a-Thon! We read thousands of pages and raised money to buy books for kids in need, supporting literacy in the Austin area! Congratulations to Top Readers and Top Fundraiser Zora, Alan, and Julia!
Author and Illustrator Dan Santat spoke to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade students, and we loved every minute of it! He gave a very entertaining reading of his book The Cookie Fiasco, and then told of his journey toward becoming an author and illustrator of children's books. He demonstrated the wonders of digital design and art with the wonderful slides he showed us as he spoke. Finally, he read his inspiring new book to us. After the Fall tells the story of how Humpty Dumpty comes to terms with his traumatic accident and "soars" to new heights. We loved the book! Dan Santat also enjoyed looking at the books our third graders made to share their own ideas of what might have happened to Humpty "after the fall". Fourth and fifth graders competed to be Class Champion and then Grade Level Champion after a year of focusing on "Word Power" in the library. Fifth grade's competition ended in an exciting tie, with two students sharing the Grade Level Champion title after finishing the entire contest vocabulary list without being eliminated!
